How To Measure Collars and Leashes

You might be wondering what size of collar your happy hound needs. Lets talk about properly sizing your next collar!

First we need to clarify what we need to measure to get an exact fit collar. When you are measuring for a collar, you need to measure the circumference of the dogs neck. Simply put, how long of a piece of string do you need to wrap around your dogs neck with out overlapping. You do not want the measurement string to be tight, allow some extra room for comfort.

The easiest, and recommended, way to measure your dogs neck size is to measure the collar they have been comfortably wearing. Make sure you measure only the parts that touch the dogs neck and do not measure anything that overlaps.

Solid Buckle Collars are very similar to must belts humans wear. The end of the collar slides thru the buckle. The collar has a series of adjustment holes that you put the prong of the buckle through to secure it. Measure from the hole you are using to the middle of the buckle where the collar passes thru.

Quick Release Collars are a little different. They use a side release buckle that makes the collar very easy to apply and remove from your happy hound. These buckles have a smaller part that fits inside the larger opening. Because these buckles overlap, do not measure from end to end. You need to exclude the smaller part of the buckle that fits inside the larger side.

Leashes are very easy to measure because they are not as precise. Leashes can be measured from end to end. Measure from the end of the snap where you clip it to the collar, and measure all the way to the opposite end.

Collars are measured to the nearest half inch (1/2") and leashes are measure to the nearest half foot. (6")
